Nyquil and recovery

Answered by Jennifer Hamilton, LCSW, CADC

Question

Should recovering alcoholics use nyquil? There is something in that medicine that makes me want to go out and get loaded and it just feels a little too nice...it almost makes me want to get sick so I can have a little more.

No, a person in recovery would be best served staying away from Nyquil.  Nyquil is 25% alcohol.  That is a very high concentration, even though it is a small amount overall.  This can set off a neurological craving in the brain for alcohol or another substance of abuse.  Best to stick to something else when ill.
