What I do
My clients have told me the work is enjoyable as well as challenging. I am a BACP Accredited Counsellor with a specialist interest in anxiety, relationships/couples and addiction issues. I have a safe supportive practice and work with BACP guidelines on ethical practice and supervision. You will find our person centred work is focused on your needs and creating an environment that supports your efforts. My work is supported by my training in Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
My story
As I am a little more than 50, I have found that I can draw on considerable personal experience of the more difficult issues in life. This together with working within the Buddhist understandings of life, have given me an acceptance of the wide range of ways people try to make their lives a little better for themselves.
I have both trained in and dealt with different aspects of addiction as a family member and I have interests in eating disorders and OCD.
I came to the UK from South Africa in 1968 and I have done lots of different work, some social work, mainly secretarial, but also some technical writing, I spent 10 years living in the wilds of Yorkshire, above the snow line and I have a real appreciation of what nature contributes to living and what sustainability means, when you have very little.

I am a recovering alcoholic with 8 years sober. I am heartbroken because my dog (a beautiful greyhound) died and this has been very upsetting to me actually it has knocked me into very severe insomnia. My dog died 2 weeks ago after getting hit by a truck when she was chasing a rabbit. My doctor says I should take a short cycle of Ambien to get back into a normal sleeping cycle. Is a 5 days of Ambien very dangerous for me since I have a history of substance abuse? I feel like I am on the edge of taking a drink.

Is it easy to get addicted to bingo? I went with my sister and she played about 20 cards at the same time. She goes twice a week. I had no idea she was so into this but she says it is a harmless socializing thing she does with her friends. What I saw was nobody talking and everyone very focused on playing bingo.

My brother is a really severe alcoholic. He is in very poor health. He is living with my family because he has nowhere else to go. He refuses all attempts to change him and honestly after 20 years of trying to get him to stop I have given up hope that he ever will. He looks very thin and weak now. He has been throwing up a lot and says he has no appetite. I can see residue of blood in the toilet bowl when he is not careful to clean up after himself. He is 47. He will not discuss his medical problems with me. He is more than 6 feet tall but very thin and weak looking except for what I always thought of as a small beer belly but which now just looks like a bloated stomach. He drinks at least a bottle of vodka a day or probably more. He also seems depressed and hopeless. I think he is dying and I want to be prepared. What are the signs that would indicate that the end is getting near. I don’t mean to sound callous but I do not know how to ask these questions except matter of fact like.

I was an alcoholic and I had acute pancreatitis 3 times. The pain was really bad. It even made me quit drinking and that was something I did not think I could ever do. Now I have had another attack even though I have not drank in 8 months and the doctors say I probably have pancreatitis for the rest of my life and it might even kill me unless I really take care of my body. I am not drinking at all anymore but I am abusing percocets and vicodins and nortabs and sometimes even heroin. I am addicted to opiates. I am only 42 and I am not ready to die. I want to quit drugs forever. I want to take Suboxone. But what I want to know is what will happen to me if I go on Suboxone and I get a sudden attack? Will I be able to take morphine on the IV like usual?

I am interested in improving my memory, concentration, working memory and quick thinking. I feel as though I am not as sharp as I used to be because of the years of hard drinking I am just recently leaving behind me. I see on the internet there are a number of programs that are supposed to improve my intelligence. Before I waste my time (and or money) with any of these, I would like some reassurance that ‘brain training’ is something that is actually going to work. Do you know if it is possible to really improve my intelligence? If so, do you have any program or method to recommend? I am 45. I do not get much intellectual stimulation at work.

My 54 year old brother falls asleep in his Lazy Boy most nights after drinking too much in front of the TV. He has been a drinker for a long time so this is not new. Lately has started sleeping with a loaded handgun right next to the chair. He says people are looking for him but he won’t say who or why. He is a nice guy and he is on a disability pension and pretty much keeps to himself so I can’t imagine who would want to hurt him. I am scared he is going to accidently hurt someone else but he won’t listen to me anymore and he has been acting really weird the last 2 months or so. He is not himself and I think there is something seriously wrong but I don’t know what to do? He is paranoid and armed and drunk. Someone is going to get hurt. What do I do?

Should I teach my daughter how to drink responsibly? She is 16. Last night she was sleeping over at her best friend’s house when her friend’s mom called us up after midnight and aid the girls had come home drunk from some party they snuck out to. I am thinking about teaching her to how to handle 2 or 3 drinks so she can get used to how that feels like in a safe environment. I would strongly advice her not to drink more than this amount ever. Good idea or not? I wish I could just make not drink at all but I just don’t think this is a practical plan.

I am a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. I have 3 years 7 months clean from all drugs and 2 years 4 months clean and sober. I am invited to a friend’s bachelor party in Vegas. He is a very good friend to me and I would like to attend. I am actually not very worried that I will be overly tempted to drink or use drugs but I have a question about gambling. My friends are not big drinkers but they like to play blackjack. I’ve never really played at all. Do you think that since I have a pretty addictive personality I need to stay away from gambling just like I need to stay away from substances? I feel like I should but I also feel like I am overreacting/being fearful of life. I don’t want live my recovery in a cave but I also don’t want to be dumb.

My brother doesn’t drink much on most days but about 2 or 3 days a week he has 7 or 8 beers and gets pretty drunk. I know this because he lives with me. He is 39 and he has been doing this for many years. He doesn’t think he has a problem but I am worried that this can’t be good for his health at his age…he is not a kid anymore. I have asked him to slow down but he says there is no reason to. I feel like I have to get high every day. I know this is not the PC thing to say but I am in my fourth decade now and I know what I can and cannot do and what I need pretty well. I can’t keep on with the drinking and harder drugs though. I know another serious round with a few of those dangerous suspects could be my last at my age. I am wondering if there is some sort of antidepressant or something like that that I could take - Or maybe even Suboxone…although I am not on opiates right now? Even though I am not depressed. That would get me as high as I need to be every day (which is not even that high really) but that is not too bad for my body and mind for use on a long term basis. I realize this request probably goes against some sort of therapeutic principles but for me, at this point in my life, it is really all about harm reduction and accepting my limitations.

Good Morning Jill... I am a VERY grateful member of Al-Anon and have been for almost 9 years. I have come a long way, and am fully aware that I can never leave this program and that I will never graduate. For me, my recovery is a matter of life and death. I hear people talk about the drug addict and alcoholic, but what about our addiction to people, places, and things? My relationships with men haven’t been much different than that of a drug addict with his drug. I have sold my soul, believed lies, and gone back to harmful situations over and over again, thinking that this time it’s going to be different, and last time wasn’t really that bad. I don't self-mutilate, nor do I have the desire to self-medicate myself with unhealthy choices today. However, I still get frustrated with my thoughts and beliefs about myself. I think I understand there are functioning alcoholics and nonfunctioning alcoholics. I have been a nonfunctioning love addict and codependent. Nonfunctioning in the sense that when I am practicing my disease, everything goes out the window. In the past I abandoned my kids, work, commitments, and whatever else I had perceived to being in the way of me practicing my addiction. I still have hysterical moments which I like to remind myself “hysterical means historical.” I am very mad at my HP and world today. I have accomplished so much in my life, and am reminded of this daily and still don’t see it in me. Short story is that my own mother never loved me. It’s my perception and I so far am unable to shake this demon that wants to hold me hostage. Years of counseling hadn’t come close to what I have gotten from Al-Anon, working my steps, sponsoring other women, and being of service on an above group level. Deep down I still feel like if you really knew me, you wouldn’t love me or want me in your life. Sometimes I think our disease is under estimated and considered ridiculous. I am here to say it’s not, it’s real, it’s painful, and it takes a huge commitment to stick with it and face the painful past. I have a future in front of me with great potential, and yet find myself trying to sabotage it with old thinking. I have a new book just published, been offered an hour on Hay House radio, and was just certified as a life coach. I have book signing engagements coming up, and I need help. The old tapes get very loud and want to fool me into believing I am not good enough and an imposter. sigh....

I am 46 and just recently remarried to a wonderful woman who takes care of her elderly mother with dementia at home. Because of this we have joined households at her house. We have no children. I knew what I was getting into or at least I thought I did but now that I have lived here for about 7 months I feel like I can't take it anymore. I feel like we either have to separate or her mother has to go to a nursing home. Her mother is verbally abusive and very demanding. I feel terrible to put my wife in this position and so I have been putting it off but I am at my breaking point. I believe that I make her happy and her mother does not. Is it wrong for me to try to get her mother out of the house even though I think that will make her happier?
Read answer →Recovery and Relationships
My partner dumped me while he was in rehab. We were together for 5 years, and had bought a house together. His drinking became so out of control that he finally ended up in jail, leaving me saddled with a huge mortgage. His treatment coincided with me selling the house for a loss, nearly losing everything. Of course I was furious at him, especially since I felt he wasn't particularly sympathetic to my worries. After a phone call in which he blamed me for not handling the finances better, I told him I needed him to leave me alone for a while. I figured he was on all sorts of meds, and I couldn't handle him being crazy at me when I was already under so much pressure. He called often over the following 8 weeks, but it wasn't until I was settled in my new flat that I finally answered. That's when he said he wanted to see other people. I haven't been able to get a good explanation from him, apart from that he simply wants a fresh start. We exchanged a few text messages since then. He said he still loves me to bits, but kept repeating that he needs different things from different people, we'll never be right for each other, he's worried if he goes back to same as before then it will be the same as before, etc. The last message I sent asked him if he really thinks I would be a bad influence on him, and explained that I was worried he's making an unhealthy decision about me. He never replied, and I haven't heard from him since. Is it common for people in recovery to abandon their partners like this? It seems very cruel to me, especially since I'm left still picking up the pieces, while he runs off to start his new life. Or is this a sign he might be on the way towards relapse? I know you can't predict the future, but any insight would be much appreciated.

I really love my wife but I don’t always love living with her. There are a thousand little things that she does that irritate me to no end. I like to eat my breakfast in peace in the morning but the sound of her chewing her bagel and cream cheese is horrendous. Petty stuff right? I know I am being stupid but I find that all the little annoyances lead me to treat her less affectionately and that this has ripple effects that run deep. I get it now how they talk about how one partner leaving the toothpaste lid off the tube can end a marriage. The problem is stupid but I can’t deny its impact. The problem is wholly mine as well, so I want to change for the better. The problem is I don’t know how to. What can I do to be less bothered by these trivial things that right now bother me so much? I am willing to work with a professional if necessary.

I think my 16 year old son might have a problem with gambling. He has been playing cards with some other students from his school for about a year now and I know they play for money. I have asked him to stop but he has not. Sometimes he seems to have a lot of cash around and sometimes I have noticed that things form his room suddenly disappear, like he needed to sell something to pay off his debts. He seems really stressed but he won’t talk to me about what’s going on and he does not admit to having a problem. My father was a bad gambler so I feel like I know the signs. My dad tried to kill himself once, so I also know how devastating this disease can be. My son is not listening to me. I would like to know what is the next step I should take?

I am worried about my grandfather's drinking but I am also confused about some things. My Grandfather immigrated from Spain about 15 years ago after my gradmother died to live with my mom and our family. He drinks all day long. Can you get online counseling for gambling addiction? I don’t know if it’s a good idea for me or not. I don’t really want to go and see a therapist because I don’t want my wife to know that I have been gambling again and it would be hard to hide going to an office every week from her. She works night and evenings so if I could find an online therapist who works those times then she would never have to know I was having sessions. The only real drawback for me is that going online is definitely a trigger for me. But maybe if I just made sure to go online only for therapy, and maybe that’s something that I could work on as well?

I am worried that being in recovery has turned me into a really boring person. I always had the crazy story from the night before, I was always the one that kept the party going and I was the one friends called when they really wanted to let loose. Now I'm 6 months sober and I don't ever have any funny stories to tell about the night before and nobody really calls me anymore since I don't know what to do with anyone now that they can still drink and I can't. The depressing thing is that I don't know how much of the fun popular guy I was was just the alcohol and how much was actually me. I can't take another awkward night with friends trying not to drink on my behalf and I can't take many more weekend nights sitting alone watching sport center either. I guess I am looking for reassurance that this is going to get better or that this is normal? I have no one to talk about this with as talking about 'my recovery' seems to bore my friends more than anything else.

My 20 year old daughter's husband is an alcoholic and a drug addict. I don't know what exactly he takes but whatever it is is it makes him very unstable. He goes through periods of months when he is Ok and is a likable fellow but then he'll do a 180 and get into using and he gets mean and he beats her. she won't exactly admit that he does but she won't deny it either and the evidence is tragically plain for all to see. We have seen him high enough times to have little doubt about his situation. She won't leave him even though I tell her he will never change. Once a wife beater always a wife beater. How do I convince her to see that this situation is never going to get better. Every time she leaves him he begs her to come back and they reconcile and then the pattern repeats all over again. It's tearing our family apart to watch this and feel powerless to do anything about it. How can I get her to understand that this guy is a junky and he is never going to stop abusing her?
Read answer →Helping other people to help themselves
Hello Ms. Edwards, I apologize that this message is so long. But I will try to summarize the best I can. I have a 24 yr old son, who we've been trying to help for the last 10 years with his mental health issues and addiction problem. My husband and I have never had drug/alcohol addiction, however my dad and my grandfather have been alcoholics. My son's problem started when his older brother (who had an opiate addiction) relapsed and tragically died of an overdose at the young age of 20. Our remaining son who at the time was 14 spiraled into a deep depression and debilitating anxiety kicked in shortly after (prior to this, we did notice that he had anxiety issues, but exaserbated). He isolated himself and threw himself into an online game that he used to cope. He would stay up all through the night playing and would have little communication with anyone. Despite our efforts of counseling, drug therapy prescribed by a psychiatrist, SPECT scan by the Amen Clinic, (which showed that he had anxiety disorder and mood disorder) etc. nothing seemed to work. He would have out of control rage and take it out on my husband and I. After a 1 1/2 years of this he went back to school, but when he did he started using alcohol first and then it turned into other drugs. He eventually was arrested at the age of 18 for posession of ecstasy and stolen property. He was ordered to a 6 month program, which he did and seemed to be doing better once he was out. Unfortunately, he soon got back into the drug scene and started using opiates. He has been on suboxone, which he has weaned himself off of just recently. He is sober now, but his addictive behavior goes into other areas of his life. Prior to giving notice, he worked in Las Vegas for a well known magician. After 8 months he decided to leave because of addiction to gambling and anxiety issues. He's now home with us (in California) and needs help to get his life on track. My husband and I have depleted all our savings, retirement, etc. to try to help our boys. My husband left his lucrative position when Aaron was 16 because we felt that we were losing him, too. Now we are at a point where we both are without work and financial means to help him. If you have any suggestions of low cost group home for young men who have mental health issues along with addiction issues to get some life coaching and possibly medication to help with debilitating anxiety would be so much appreciated. Or if you have any other suggestions? We are at a point where we know there's not more we can do, but want to try to reach out to other experts in this matter. Thank you so much - CC

If video lottery terminals are the most addictive form of gambling what is the safest or least addictive way to gamble? Is playing a game like poker less addictive because there actually is a lot of skill involved and not only chance and flashing lights?

I used to smoke marijuana quite a lot when I was younger. Now my son is using. He is 17. I am not that worried about it since I don't think it is a very harmful drug, actually I would rather he smoke a joint than get drunk. My wife says that marijuana today is a lot stronger and it is dangerous now and that it is addictive now and not like it used to be. She never used drugs of any kind so I am not sure if she isn't just freaked by the idea of ANY drug use by our son and maybe she is not acting totally rationally. Is the marijuana floating around today really more dangerous? I understand that it is stronger but doesn't that just mean you need to smoke less to get high... I seem to remember getting pretty high even on the low potency weed of 20 years ago…

My husband gets very aggressive when he drinks alcohol. He only drinks about once or twice a week but whenever he goes beyond a few beers he gets very belligerent and we always end up fighting. I always tell myself I am not going to let him bait me into something but he just won’t quit until he has picked a fight with me and anyone else around me. He always feels bad about the way he acts the next day but that doesn’t really help at the time when he seems to lack this sense of self awareness. When he’s not drinking he is a nice guy and not at all aggressive. He has never hit me or anyone else. He doesn’t drink every day so he is not an alcoholic or anything like that. I have asked him to quit drinking because of the way it makes him behave but he says he enjoys relaxing with his friends and since he doesn’t drink too often he doesn’t have a problem like a lot of people he knows. What can he do to stop acting the way he acts when he is drunk? Is there anything I can do to keep him from becoming such a difficult person after a few drinks?

I am a long time user of over the counter codeine/paracetemol. I take about 10 to 15 per day but the recommended daily maximum is only 8 so I know I am playing with fire and risking my liver every day. I am trying to cut down but it is very hard. I have been using these pills every day for more than 5 years. There are a lot of unpleasant withdrawal symptoms I get when I try to cut down but the worst is the restless legs I get. My legs feel all jumpy and jittery as soon as I try to relax and go to sleep and it is impossible to fall asleep with this feeling. It is really really unpleasant and frustrating. Do you have any advice on anything I can do to relieve the restless legs problem? I try exercising to tire myself out but it doesn’t seem to really help.

I quit cocaine and ever since I have been feeling very irritable. I am 3 weeks clean and it’s a bummer that I am not feeling a little more in good spirits. I feel like I should celebrate the longest I have been clean in years but what I actually seem to be doing is getting annoyed with everyone around me. How much longer am I going to feel this way? Or have I done some permanent damage to my brain and this is my new personality?

I play in a band and I am off the coke. I can’t quit the band but it is hard to resist the drugs that are all around me. My band mates are pretty cool about not using around me to support my recovery but it’s just everywhere and I can’t not see it. I am going to lose my music unless I get control of my addiction but to get control of my addiction it seems like I need to lose my music – and without my music, I might as well use drugs. It’s a catch 22. Any advice?

I drink a lot, my life is a mess and I am totally depressed. The only reason I really get out of bed most days is because I need to get to the beer store each day and then I just watch TV and drink all day long and I don’t know if I have the energy or desire most days to do anything to change this. Today is a good day which is why I am writing this. I am starting to get the shakes in the middle of the night and I have to drink to make them stop. This is screwed up and I am only 27. Tomorrow I am probably going to be really depressed again and there is no way when I feel like I normally do that I am going to drag myself to some AA meeting or something. There is just no way that is going to happen. How am I supposed to stop drinking when I need to and when I am so depressed I can’t be bothered to even leave the house?
