What is the GenPsych NJ Ambulatory (Outpatient) Detox Program?

The GenPsych Ambulatory Detox Program is an outpatient model for individuals requiring detoxification from drugs and alcohol. This program is unique in that our clients are not only safely and comfortably detoxed with the assistance of medication, but they are also offered therapeutic programming to learn more about their addiction, as well as relapse prevention skills to help manage and sustain their recovery. Our educated, experienced, and compassionate staff provides support and understanding as individuals enter this initial stage of treatment. Our staff also has the knowledge and ability to engage and motivate clients during this difficult and delicate stage in the journey of their recovery. Our program allows clients to immediately put into practice the skills they learn as clients are able to return to their home environment nightly, which is where they will need to be able to implement their newly learned skills.

 

Why choose the GenPsych NJ Ambulatory Detox Program over Inpatient Detox?

As an outpatient detoxification program, our clients have the ability to utilize both the clinical environment and the home environment while on their way to recovery from chemical dependency. What makes the program unique is that our clients receive many of the same benefits as inpatient detoxification but in a less restrictive and more cost effective setting. In addition to detoxification, our program offers therapeutic programming to clients so that they will be able to practice their newly learned recovery skills at home. This allows our clients to continue with their daily routines while also allowing them close access to their social support systems such as friends and family.

 

What should a client expect when scheduling an assessment?

1. Scheduling – When a client calls 1-855-436-7792, he/she will reach one of our staff in central admissions. They will collect the caller's information and will schedule an appointment along with transportation to and from our facility that same day. (Callers after 5pm will be asked to press option 2 for Detox appointments, which will redirect them to our 24/7 admissions line to speak to a live after hours representative.)
2. Medical Information Screening – A nurse from our program will contact the client to gather any relevant medical information (medical history, substance used, last use, etc.), will answer any questions the client may have, and will discuss the types of medications that will be used to assist him/her with withdrawal symptoms.
3. Transportation – Transportation will pick the client up at the time of the scheduled appointment from most New Jersey locations and will transport him/her to our facility.
4. Medical Detoxification – Upon arriving at our facility, the client will be assessed and immediately provided with medication to assist with the presenting withdrawal symptoms.

Clients are initially screened for appropriateness by our nursing staff. Upon admission to the program an individualized but safe and conservative detox protocol is used to ensure the medical safety and comfort of each client. It is our goal that each client has a comfortable and therapeutic experience, and is ready to move on to the next phase of their recovery.

What types of Ambulatory Detox Programs are offered?

Our Ambulatory Detox Program currently aims to treat withdrawal symptoms of All Substances. Some of these include:

1. OPIATE DETOX – Heroin, Oxycodone, Oxycontin, Percocet, Vicodin, Morphine, Dilaudid, Methadone, and others. Opiates, derived from the opium poppy plant, are a group of narcotics that produce a sedative or “pain killing” effect. Opiate withdrawal refers to the wide range of symptoms that occur after stopping or dramatically reducing opiate drugs after heavy and prolonged use (several weeks or more). The early symptoms of withdrawal include agitation, anxiety, muscle aches, increased tearing, insomnia, runny nose, sweating, and yawning. 2. BENZODIAZEPINE DETOX – Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, and others. Benzodiazepines are a group of psychoactive drugs that act on the neurotransmitter receptor GABA to produce a heavily tranquilizing effect. Benzodiazepine Withdrawal refers to the group of symptoms experienced by patients who have taken benzodiazepines for a period of time and have developed a physical dependence after reducing dosages or discontinuing use. Symptoms of withdrawal can include sleep disturbances and rebound insomnia, restlessness, irritability, elevated anxiety, weakness, blurred vision, panic attacks, tremors, sweating/flushing, nausea/vomiting, headache, seizures, psychosis, and hallucinations. 3. ALCOHOL DETOX – Prolonged and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to high tolerance and physical dependence. Approximately half of all alcohol abusers develop withdrawal symptoms when reducing their use. Management of alcohol withdrawal is based on the patient's history and current clinical status. The single best predictor of the likelihood of future withdrawal symptoms is the patient's previous history, e.g., the presence or absence of seizures or delirium. How are withdrawal symptoms treated in the Ambulatory Detox Program?

The Ambulatory Detoxification services will consist of a medically managed, monitored and structured detoxification service provided on an outpatient, voluntary basis and delivered by a physician or other service personnel acting under the supervision of a physician. We treat withdrawal symptoms for All Substances. Some treatments include:

1. OPIATE WITHDRAWAL TREATMENT

   • Treatment includes supportive care and medications.
   • Medical treatment can include intervention methods such as clonidine and buprenorphine (Subutex)
   • A treatment called long-term maintenance may also be used to reduce the intensity of withdrawal symptom

2. BENZODIAZEPINE WITHDRAWAL TREATMENT

   • Benzodiazepine treatment often varies depending on the type of drug taken, the amount of drug taken, and the time elapsed between consumption and treatment.
   • Support from family and friends is crucial during treatment from benzodiazepine addiction.
   • In general, benzodiazepines should be discontinued slowly to minimize symptoms.

3. ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL TREATMENT

   • Alcohol withdrawal may be treated with a pharmacologic agent that exhibits cross-tolerance with alcohol. Agents that are commonly recommended include diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), chlordiazepoxide (Librium), clorazepate (Tranxeme) and phenobarbital.
   • Medications such as disulfiram (Antabuse), Naltrexone (Vivitrol, ReVia), Acamprosate (Campral), and topiramate (Topamax) are sometimes used to help a person stay sober and resist drinking urges.
   • In addition to medication, group therapy, counseling, and alcohol education is also strongly recommended during recovery.
